What are Reproductive Hormones?

“Hormone” comes from the Greek word “hormao,” which means “I excite.” It refers to the way that hormones stimulate a specific gland, the “target gland.”

Reproductive hormones affect an array of body functions, including growth and development, metabolism, stamina, energy, sexual function, fertility and mood. Low levels of these hormones can lead to the development of diseases that decrease your quality of life.

Typical Treatment Programs at Amped MD

Amped MD typically prescribes bioidentical hormone pellets that are implanted under the skin. They release a consistent, steady dose of hormones over several months. Pellets are compounded, made in a 503b FDA Registered Outsourcing Facility with FDA approved ingredients. Compared to other synthetic hormones, bioidentical hormones more closely match your body’s natural hormones.

Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) uses processed hormones that come from plants. Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are the most commonly-used bioidentical hormones.

The Main Reproductive Hormones

Testosterone, estrogen (a group of hormones: estradiol, estriol and estrone) and progesterone are the primary reproductive hormones. They are crucial for sexuality and fertility. In males, they are produced in the testes. In females, they are produced in the ovaries.

The pituitary gland and the adrenal glands also contribute to the production, storage and activation of these and other reproductive hormones.

These reproductive hormones are produced at different amounts over your life. They decrease as you age – causing low testosterone in men and perimenopause and menopause in women.

While small amounts, men have estrogen too. In men, low estrogen can cause excess fat in their middle section as well as low sex drive. High estrogen in men can cause infertility, poor erections and enlarged breasts (gynecomastia).
